In a Graveyard

Strange to find peace here, among these stones,
I sit under a tree, I listen to the wind’s tones.
In my youth, I recall being scared of this place,
Funny, now it wraps me in a warm embrace.

Those whose bodies slumber ‘neath the elm,
Hurt and cry no more, alive in a different realm.
I sense eternity’s kiss upon my flushed brow,
Someday my body may lie here, I don’t ask how.

The wind moves the branches above my head,
“If you can speak, share my words,” I said.
“Tell of the peace I know, God’s sweet promise,
“That when I join Him, He’ll make me flawless.”

The path here bears the marks of many steps,
From the people who come to pay their respects.
Waves of sweet sorrow or maybe just longing?
Sweep o’er me, for it’s eternity I’ve been wanting.
